Lagos – A
52-year-old woman, Bunmi Akinyemi, who allegedly assaulted her brother’s
wife,
Ireti Obembe by beating her to a pulp, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja
Magistrates’ Court.
Akinyemi, a
resident of Ayobo area of Lagos, is standing trial on a one-count charge of
assault.
The prosecutor,
Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June
21 at Power Line, Ajasa Command, Lagos.
Akeem said
that the accused assaulted the complainant by beating her to a pulp.
The
prosecutor alleged that Obembe said the fight started as a result of an
argument which ensued between her and the accused.
“The
complainant said that she was at her shop when her sister-in-law dragged her
out of the shop and started beating her.
“She said
that the accused claimed she was beating her for taking her brother to court,
instead of settling the dispute between them amicably.
“Obembe who
was very angry about what her sister-in-law had done, reported the matter to
the police and the accused was later arrested, “Akeem said.\
The offence
contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised) The
accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. Section 173 prescribes
three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm. The Magistrate, Mr T.O
Shomade granted the accused bail in the sum N10,000 with one surety in like
sum. The case was adjourned till July 31, for mention. (NAN)
